Proteas coach Mark Boucher think it would be “stupid” to lose the services of Jacques Kallis Y Paul Harris to the national configuration.
Kallis has been operating as a hitting consultant for the Proteas since Boucher took over the reins late last year, while Harris worked as a spinning consultant, especially with Test spinner Keshav Maharaj.
However, none of the coaches work full time, but Boucher is hopeful that something can be done to keep them close each time cricket resumes after the global coronavirus crisis.
“They have done a great job,” Boucher said of Kallis and Harris.
“I’m not quite sure what’s going to happen to them in the future, but it would be stupid to lose two cricket brains like that. I hope we can contractually resolve something both to move forward and for other guys to come in. With new ideas.”
Boucher, who said he was disappointed and encouraged by his first summer in charge of the Proteas, especially praised his assistant Enoch Nkwe.
“The core of the coaching staff is me and Enoch (Nkwe) and then you get Langers (Charl Langeveldt) on the bowling side, which has been brilliant, and then you get Onters (Justin Ontong) who is the field coach but also it adds a lot of value in the batting department as well, “Boucher explained.
“Me and Enoch have had great conversations and I think we understand each other very well right now. Our heads are in the right places and we certainly have the same idea of where we want to go.”
“I think we complement each other very well. He has a lot of player relationships that I haven’t met correctly yet and he is very supportive of helping to take a load off me from time to time, and I am very grateful for that.”
South Africa’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka and the West Indies is still in doubt as the coronavirus continues to complicate the international sports calendar.
