Eighteen people have been arrested after a group of Fraserburg residents “went wild” on Saturday, demanding that cigarettes and liquor be sold, looting local shops, damaging a police vehicle and injuring an officer, Northern Cape police said.
“It was reported yesterday, between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm, residents were furious demanding that liquor and cigarettes be sold,” said police spokesman Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba.
Things got violent, according to Ramatseba, when the police tried to disperse the crowd.
“The police were thrown with stones while trying to disperse the crowd. A police member’s hand was broken and the Bakkie police windows damaged. The rampaging crowd looted a grocery store, “adds Ramatseba.
Food worth R100,000 was stolen during looting.
Police officers arrested 18 people, ages 25 to 61, in connection with cases of malicious property damage, burglary and burglary, and violation of the Disaster Management Act regulations.
Police were still investigating the incident, Ramatseba said.
