CAPE TOWN – Western Cape Prime Minister Alan Winde has expressed concern at the increase in people gathering in places like shopping malls and public areas for exercise.

Physical activity has been allowed since Friday when the Level 4 blocking restrictions went into effect.

However, it is only allowed between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., and only within a 5 kilometer radius of your home.

Winde said that, in an attempt to reduce congestion during assigned exercise hours, he will write to the national government to request an additional exercise session in the afternoon.

He believes this will help relieve congestion and allow those who are at work in the morning to exercise later in the day.

It is the 37th day of closure and the Western Cape currently has nearly 2,700 confirmed infections.

One hundred and fourteen patients have been hospitalized and 39 of them are receiving intensive care treatment.

Fifty-two residents of the province have died after contracting the virus.
