To date, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa is 6,336, according to the health ministry.
The total number of tests carried out to date is 230,686, of which 13,164 were carried out in the last 24 hours. This is the largest number of tests performed in a 24 hour cycle to date.
The increase represents 385 new infections and seven more deaths brings the death toll to 123.

“Unfortunately, we are saddened to report seven other COVID-19 related deaths from the Western Cape and the Free State.
“We wish to express our condolences to the families of the deceased and to greet the health workers who treated the deceased patients.
“However, we are pleased to report that the number of recoveries is now 2,549.”

Comorbidities
“We have analyzed data from patients who have been hospitalized and found that, based on emerging evidence worldwide, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease are the three most common comorbidities associated with serious COVID-19 disease.
“Other comorbidities that were observed among the patients admitted to COVID-19 were chronic lung disease, asthma, chronic kidney disease, malignancy, HIV, past and active tuberculosis.
“Therefore, I would like to urge our millions of South Africans over the age of 63 and those living with these conditions to take additional precautions as we ease the closure,” said Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.
“I would also like to urge all South Africans to continue at home as much as possible, only venturing out to perform essential tasks as we move through the stages of the gradual closure of the closure.”
