JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa said South Africa will not escape job loss due to COVID-19

In his May Day statement, the President said that the health of all South Africans is important, but that poor, unemployed and working-class citizens are paramount.

He said that as the country descends to level 4 blockade, companies must guarantee the safety of their workers.

President Ramaphosa has reiterated once again that while the COVID-19 national blockade has had a major impact on poor South Africans, the spread of the pandemic needed to be stopped.

“It is now clear that the world will experience a substantial economic contraction and in the immediate future a significant lack of employment: our own country, South Africa, will not get rid of this.”

He said that as millions struggle to earn a living during the shutdown, the macroeconomy suffers the most.

“Our effort to change the economy to create opportunities for young people to stabilize public finances and restore state-owned companies has now suffered a major setback.”

Ramaphosa said companies are expected to evaluate all workers every day, and those who employ more than 500 people should make the necessary arrangements to send people for evaluation.
