Police Minister Bheki Cele says some South Africans are not obeying the shutdown regulations and warned that the level 4 regulations could be reversed as Covid-19 has the potential to “wipe out humanity.”
Cele spoke during a joint law enforcement operation in which the cars were stopped to check compliance in Krugersdorp on Friday.
When the country entered its first day of the level 4 blockade, no physical distancing was observed in some areas.
“I saw this thing run, I think we will make some form of recommendation to the National Command Council about it.
“Not only that, I saw … people running in clubs, walking with their dogs and even swimming, something that is [criminalised] in the regulations, ”Cele said.
He added that the police were asking South Africans to refrain from breaking the blockade regulations and only conduct essential business.

“This is a problem … I don’t know if they are taking this matter seriously, they should be.
“The fact that we have arrested so many people who drank from their cars tells you that we will have to work hard and, by the way, remember what the President said: if things don’t go the right way, investing is easy. From what we have seen, South Africa is misbehaving, “Cele said.
He added that people’s actions currently suggest “we can forget about level 3” and do not “deserve” the relaxation of the restrictions.
“The non-compliance with the regulations was not due to people not knowing about them,” Cele said.
Deceased
“People know. What I suppose they don’t believe is that there have been many deaths.
“As South Africans, we are still lucky, but we are starting to pick up: the day before yesterday it was the first time we had 354 at a time … and 10 deaths in one day,” Cele said.
He added that South Africa might follow in the footsteps of Italy or the United States, where tens of thousands of people died.
“The problem is that it will not only be you who dies, you will die with the rest of us. This has the potential to eliminate the nation, eliminate humanity, “Cele said.
