CAPE TOWN – Plans to transform the Cape Town International Convention Center (CTICC) into a COVID-19 hospital are underway.

Prime Minister Alan Winde and Health Department officials shared details of the plan on Thursday afternoon.

The province forecasted 80,000 infections at the peak and was facing a shortage of 1,000 non-ICU beds.

Winde said they would add 1,400 acute beds to make up for the deficit.

At the CTICC, 857 beds will be distributed in four large rooms: “There will be a great deal of work that will happen in the coming days.”

Professor Lee Wallis said they were in a rush to have the installation ready by June.

He said that at the peak, it would process 200 admissions and 200 daily downloads, which would make it one of the largest and busiest hospitals in the province.

Wallis added that there will be waste management systems, three meals a day for patients and support services such as x-rays on site.

The center will only accept patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 and do not need a bed in the ICU.
