Confirmed cases of Covid-19 SA soar to 5,350, 10 more deaths

Cape Town – South Africa now has 5,350 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 103 deaths as a result of the coronavirus that has infected more than 3 million people worldwide, Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize.

This is an increase of 354 in Tuesday’s confirmed cases.

“This is the largest number of cases in a 24-hour cycle recorded to date and represents a 73% increase from the previous day,” Mkhize said.

During an in-depth briefing on Tuesday, Mkhize said that scientific models had shown that the national blockade had the desired effect in terms of containing the spread of the virus and that the decision announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last week to enter a level of gradual alertness the blockade was based on sound scientific advice.

A total of 197,127 people have been screened for coronavirus in the public and private sectors to date, Mkhize said on Wednesday.

The Western Cape remains the province with the highest number of confirmed cases with 2,135 and 38 deaths, it has also recorded the highest number of deaths.

The last three deaths, two men, aged 78 and 67, and a woman aged 79, had underlying diseases, according to Prime Minister Alan Winde.

KwaZulu-Natal – 956

Eastern Cape Province – 630

Free State – 113

Limpopo – 31

Northwest – 29

Mpumalanga – 31

North Cape – 17

Starting May 1, the country will enter level 4 of the government’s gradual relief plan, which will cause some sectors to resume operations. Additional evaluations would be performed before moving to less stringent blocking levels.

Ministers of the National Coronavirus Command Council are briefing the public on Wednesday night about new regulations that will govern the four-phase closure plan.
