Comoros has announced its first confirmed coronavirus infection, making it the second African country to report a Covid-19 case.

The Indian Ocean archipelago and the small mountainous kingdom of Lesotho were the only two countries with no recorded case of coronavirus on the continent.

“On this day of April 30, 2020, the government declares the first Covid-19 case in the Comoros,” President Azali Assoumani said during a speech to the nation on Thursday.

The case involves a man in his 50s who came into contact with a French-Comorian citizen with a recent history of travel to France.

“The patient’s medical condition is gradually improving,” Azali said, adding that his contacts were being tracked.

No total block

The president said the priority now would be to protect the health system from overload, which would force the government to take “even more draconian measures” to protect the population from some 832,000.

“While other countries that were hit earlier are preparing to return to normal, our country is entering a critical phase.” Assoumani warned.

Last night, a nightly curfew came into effect to limit the chances of the coronavirus spreading in the country.

Assoumani said that it had not imposed a total closure because the majority of the population lives on informal work.

“At this stage of the pandemic, we cannot afford to take measures that can lead to social and economic drama,” he added.

A health worker who declined to give her name told the AFP news agency that the announcement came “quite late.”

“Just a positive case? The president is funny. [real] the number is much higher, “he said.

Earlier this month, Assoumani angry he discredited the news of a coronavirus case reported by a former minister on the neighboring island of Mayotte.
