Reds legend Robson offered his take on the midfield situation and feels that a regular streak of games brought out the best in Matic and Fred.
“Matic wasn’t getting too many games and every time he came he seemed a little rusty, and Fred was exactly the same.”
he said. “McTominay was coming in leaps and bounds but then he was injured. Suddenly Matic and Fred are having more opportunities to play regularly, and I thought their fitness was really good.
“Nemanja is one of them, a good interceptor who reads the game well, as Michael did. Fred loves rigging! Sometimes he’s a little reckless, but he loves touring the park and I thought we saw the best of those two in the last 15-16 games we played.
“Fernandes has definitely helped them a lot with the way he got into the ball and his passing range and vision. And then taking him aboard for early shooting, as he did, was brilliant.
“I think the balance worked very well and that is why we were in a good race.”
