Seven people were killed and another 13 injured in a terrible accident between a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi and a sedan on Melkbosstrand Road, between the N7 exit and Mamre Road in Cape Town.

According to Maxine Bezuidenhout, spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services, the head-on collision occurred around 07:55 on Monday.

“When the police arrived at the scene, the medical and fire services [officials were] already on the scene helping the wounded, “said police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk.

Van Wyk added that paramedics declared seven people dead and that another 13 people were taken to various metro hospitals.

Tire explosion

It is alleged that the taxi was driving from the direction of Du Noon and was carrying passengers to Melkbosstrand. On Melkbosstrand Road, the taxi tire apparently blew out and the vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle.

“The driver of the other vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and jaws of life [were used to remove his body from the
wreckage]”Van Wyk added.

The taxi driver was seriously injured and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Bezuidenhout said Melkbosstrand Road was closed in both directions, between the N7 and the Mamre Road exit.

A wrongful death case was registered for investigation.

“The bodies of the deceased have yet to be identified,” Van Wyk said.
