More than 6,000 government officials fraudulently benefited R41m from the Covid-19 Temporary Employee Relief Plan (Ters) Benefit from the Unemployment Insurance Fund, parliament heard on Wednesday.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) told parliament’s permanent public accounts committee (Scopa) that 6,140 government officials claimed a total of just over R41m from the aid fund benefit, using 3,959 bank accounts.

Of those bank accounts, 581 were associated with multiple beneficiaries (3,079 of them) and 55 beneficiaries were identified who did not have bank accounts. These benefited in the amount of R301,124.

In addition, dead and imprisoned people also benefited from the plan. The MPs heard that seven inmates from the department of correctional services were identified as claimants to the relief fund, worth R40,657.

SIU’s Johnny le Roux told MPs that they said 68 “deceased” people, using 72 bank accounts, received benefits from Ters totaling R441,144. Seven of the “deceased” beneficiaries had multiple bank accounts.
