A baby was killed by a dog who apparently wanted to help her.

Her employer’s dog killed the 6-week-old baby of a domestic worker in what police described as a “tragic accident” in a Johannesburg housing estate on Thursday.

According to Honeydew Police spokesman Captain Balan Muthan, the baby was asleep while his mother worked, but then woke up and started crying.

“The family dogs heard the baby cry. The paternal instincts entered the dog and they went to pick up the child. Unfortunately, the child later suffered injuries that led to her death.”

According to Muthan, the domestic worker, who has not been named, and her baby lived with the family.

Muthan said the family had two dogs and did not find them aggressive.

“Without knowing it, I stood next to that dog [that killed the baby], and there was no aggression at all. This was just a tragic and unfortunate accident. “

Muthan added that the baby was not seriously bitten, but suffered fatal injuries due to the dog’s attempt to move her.

“The matter is under investigation. The dog, a husky, has been brought to the SPCA and an investigation file has been opened.”
