Of the recently recorded deaths, 166 were recorded in Gauteng, 133 in KwaZulu-Natal, 129 in the Eastern Cape, 77 in the Western Cape, 37 in the Free State, 18 in Mpumalanga, and 15 in the Northern Cape.
“In the last week we have observed a decrease in transmission as evidenced by the reduction in daily new cases, a constantly decreasing positivity rate (19% today from a peak of 36% in this wave) and promising evidence of a deviation towards below the admission numbers. We hope that this decline in numbers will bring much needed respite to our overwhelmed healthcare facilities, both in the public and private sectors, ”said the Minister of Health.
He added that these figures were being closely monitored “to inform our process of recommending the revision of some of the restrictions that are currently in effect.
“We are very grateful to all South Africans for playing their role in mitigating the devastating effects of Covid-19. However, we continue to warn that the transmission rate remains very high and we must ensure that it is reduced to an acceptable level before we can ease the restrictions.
“Therefore, it is imperative that we do not get fatigued and continue to focus on the things that we know provide protection: strict use of masks, social distancing, and regular disinfection of hands and surfaces,” he said.
So far, 1,201,284 recoveries have been recorded, at a recovery rate of 86%.
