Durban – Police arrested 35 people following a protest by Durban artists on the N3 road in Durban this morning.
Metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said 35 people were arrested while six vehicles, including two trucks, were impounded.
He added that the arrests were made by specialized units of the Metropolitan Police and since then the road had been opened to traffic.
Earlier in the day, the protest paralyzed traffic along the N3 eastbound and westbound in the vicinity of the EB Cloete interchange.
The protest was organized by a group of Durban artists who wanted to draw attention to the impact the national shutdown had had on their industry.
The group set up a stage on the national highway and organized a mini concert.
They say that the blocking regulations and the limitation of people in the places was having an impact on their pockets.
Armed with banners, the group demanded to be taken seriously by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The lockdown was implemented in South Africa earlier this year and several industries have suffered significant losses.
Despite the markdowns over the months, artists say they still had to cut back because regulations didn’t allow for larger gatherings.
In accordance with Level 2 regulations, nightclubs remain closed while pubs and bars, under restricted guidelines, are open to the public.
