CAPE TOWN – Police have arrested at least 35 people in looting connections in recent days.
There have been sporadic attacks in various communities, targeting food delivery trucks and robberies in supermarkets.
There have been growing complaints from impoverished communities that they are starving, because they cannot earn a living during the shutdown.
Police remain on high alert after several looting incidents in various Cape Town communities.
Four people were arrested after a crowd served themselves food worth around R3,000 at a Usave supermarket in Elsies River on Wednesday.
In Delft, looters broke into a supermarket and took R4,000 worth of food. Three looting incidents were reported in the same area the day before, resulting in five arrests.
Four people were caught for public violence in Philippi East after public order police prevented a crowd from looting a delivery truck, and 13 other people were arrested for looting in Macassar.
Chaos also erupted in the west coast city of Vredenburg when hundreds of residents of the Witteklip municipality attempted to storm a spaza store, complaining that they had not received food packages.
Meanwhile, four suspects appeared in Bishop Lavis magistrates court in connection with the looting of a truck carrying packages of food on Monday.
