The Minister of Employment and Labor, Thulas Nxesi, updated the National Assembly on Tuesday on the progress made in dealing with corruption linked to the alleviation of COVID-19.

CAPE TOWN – Labor and Employment Minister Thulas Nxesi said that so far 3.5 billion rand in illicit payments have been recovered from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) of the Temporary Employment Assistance Fund (TERS) Program.
Nxesi updated the National Assembly on Tuesday on the progress made in addressing corruption linked to COVID-19 relief.
The FIU has paid more than R49 billion so far.

Nxesi said the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) was on the case: “The SIU is investigating to identify and charge the people who benefited from illegal payments and recover the money. In some cases, bank accounts have been frozen and assets seized. People have been charged and arrested. 3.5 billion rand of improper payments have been recovered. “
Nxesi said the FIU was also tracking the money and tracking every payment made.

“Eight forensic auditing and audit firms have been appointed nationwide to expedite the process. The National Treasury technical advisory center has been working with the FIU to improve the functionality of the system and improve ease of use ”.
Members of the opposition party, however, say they have been inundated with complaints about defaults or long delays.
Nxesi said all pending legitimate claims would be paid.
