A 25-year-old man was shot and killed and his brother wounded after three suspects shot them in an alleged conflict between warring gangs in Ocean View, Western Cape.

The incident occurred in the late afternoon on Saturday, police spokesman Brig. Novela Potelwa said in a statement.

Potelwa added that later in the evening, a large group of men apparently responded to the shooting incident and set two vehicles on fire near the shooting site.

“It is alleged that the group also chased another man who had to jump from the window of his house while fleeing from his attackers.”

An informal home was also damaged during the attacks.

A 23-year-old suspect, who was part of the group, was arrested after he was found in possession of a homemade firearm (zip gun) and ammunition.

“Meanwhile, two people are being questioned by detectives in connection with the shooting incident. A 19-year-old was arrested for one of the two vehicles that were set on fire,” Potelwa said.

Ocean View detectives are investigating murders, attempted murders, and malicious damage to property cases. Since then, the Anti-Gang Unit, the Tactical Response Team, the Public Order Police and additional detectives have been deployed to the area to monitor the outbreaks and locate suspects.

“The area is relatively quiet at the moment as the police continue to monitor the situation,” Potelwa said.
