2021 local elections can be done online – IEC – The Citizen

The South African Electoral Commission (IEC) is investigating the online voting process for next year’s municipal elections due to the uncertainty of how long the coronavirus pandemic will last.

IEC chief Sy Mamabolo said it may be an ideal opportunity to end policy discussions on an online voting process, as reported by EWN.

He said that now was the right time to look for alternative electronic ways to make elections. It should be considered that political parties adapt to digital campaigns, social distancing at polling stations, and that voters and polling stations are disinfected frequently.

Due to closure restrictions, 37 midterms have been postponed, making any type of traditional election campaign and voting difficult.

“It is a very complex and detailed discussion that we require in the country that involves parliament, political parties and the main stakeholders. We will analyze what is the appropriate system and it is a long-term political discussion, it will not be resolved immediately.”
