JOHANNESBURG – Two SAPS members, who were driving a police bakkie are among 11 suspects arrested in a botched robbery in Bryanston on Saturday night.

A multidisciplinary team, including national criminal intelligence, the Johannesburg Flying Squad, the K9 unit, and the JMPD responded after receiving an alert of a planned commercial robbery: they observed the target location since noon.

Then, at around 8:30 pm, the team identified three vehicles heading toward the target location, including the marked police bakkie.

The response team approached as the suspects exited the vehicles, but began shooting at the officers who responded to the fire.

The arrested police officers, a detective sergeant, stationed at Kempton Park, and a Springs clerk, will also be subject to a departmental disciplinary investigation.

Two of the suspects suffered gunshot wounds to the legs.

Police Brenda Murudili said: “The suspects will appear in Randburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday 8 December. They will face charges of conspiracy to commit theft, attempted murder, possession of firearms and ammunition without a license, possession of an allegedly stolen vehicle and driving a vehicle without the consent of the owner ”.
