CAPE TOWN – Two police station commanders have been arrested in Gauteng in connection with firearms licensing fraud and corruption.

The national police commissioner’s office has revealed that members of the Western Cape anti-gang unit assisted by the national anti-corruption unit had arrested the brigade members.

Police said 28 people had been arrested in connection with the matter and 17 of those arrested in connection with firearms trafficking were police officers.

The arrests of the two station commanders were carried out on Tuesday.

Police said investigations began three years ago when it emerged that security companies were involved in extortion in the Western Cape related to firearms applications in Gauteng.

Cape Town underworld figure Nafiz Modack was arrested in June in connection with firearms license fraud.

He was released on bail at Kempton Park Magistrates Court.

Earlier this year, he and others were acquitted of extorting money from a Cape Town restaurant.
