Cape Town: The Health Department is only aware of 19 public school students who tested positive for the coronavirus at a social gathering in Cape Town, says the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

News24 reported that at least 47 high school students from seven schools in Cape Town tested positive for the coronavirus after attending a “super spread” event at a Claremont nightclub, Tin Roof, on October 3. It is alleged that 32 of the students are in matrix.

“The Health Department has informed WCED that there are several individuals who have tested positive for Covid-19 associated with a non-school related social gathering,” WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond told IOL.

” The Department of Health has confirmed that 19 public school students have tested positive for Covid-19. A tracking team from the Health Department has contacted the students and is following up on close contacts.

” It is important to reiterate the importance of preventive measures since Covid-19 is still with us. Social gatherings should be discouraged and health and safety protocols adhered to, including wearing masks at all events in public and hand washing and social distancing.

“WCED will reaffirm these precautions in correspondence with schools.”

Herschel Girls’ High School Principal Heather Goedeke confirmed that 13 of the school’s enrollment students who tested positive for the coronavirus were linked to the Tin Roof group.

Rondebosch High was claimed to have 11 cases related to the Tin Roof event.

Tin Roof had promised cheap alcohol on social media before the event.

A parent posted on the Tin Roof Facebook page: ” Tin Roof serves Corona free to all teens in the southern suburbs. The neighbor’s daughter was even able to bring home something to take away. ”
