As of Sunday, October 25, 2020, South Africa has registered a total number of 715,868 positive cases of Covid-19, with 1,622 new cases reported, the health department announced.
The country has registered 24 deaths from New Covid-19, bringing the total number to 18,968. Of the 24 deaths reported today, 5 occurred in the last 48 hours.
The total number of recoveries now stands at 646,170.
These are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis:
– More than 1.1 million deaths –
The virus has claimed at least 1,151,077 lives worldwide since it first appeared in China late last year, according to an AFP count at 1100 GMT Sunday according to official sources.
At least 42,694,798 cases have been recorded worldwide.
The United States is the most affected country with 224,906 deaths, followed by Brazil with 156,903, India with 118,534, Mexico with 88,743 and Great Britain with 44,745.
– Italy tightens measures –
Italy tightens its antivirus controls despite opposition from regional bosses and street protests.
According to the new rules that will take effect on Monday and will be in effect until November 24, cinemas, theaters, gyms and swimming pools must close, while restaurants and bars must stop serving at 6:00 p.m.
– Spain considers curfews –
A cabinet meeting will be held in Spain as the country reflects on a new state of national emergency that would allow it to impose curfews and other containment measures.
– Pence’s top assistant tests positive –
US Vice President Mike Pence’s Chief of Staff tests positive for Covid-19, says a spokesman, the latest on a list of figures related to the Donald Trump administration to do so.
Marc Short is in quarantine and is assisting in the contract tracing process, Pence spokesman Devin O’Malley said in a statement.
– Obama criticizes Trump for the virus –
