Fourteen people were killed in a collision between two trucks and a minibus taxi on the N3 highway near Estcourt in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday night.

KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Service spokesman Robert Mckenzie said 13 women and one man were among the victims.

He said the accident is believed to have occurred between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. last night.

“Last night, paramedics and emergency services responded to a serious accident on the N3 road in the vicinity of Estcourt in KwaZulu-Natal. The accident involved two trucks and a minibus. Tragically, 14 people have suffered fatal injuries. “

Mckenzie said all the victims were from the minibus taxi and that the truckers had escaped unharmed.

“One person was seriously injured and was taken to hospital for ongoing care. The exact cause of the accident is unknown at this time and is being investigated by the police. “

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Bheki Ntuli, said preliminary reports indicate that the minibus taxi was traveling between two trucks, when the truck in front of the taxi doubled over and the taxi collided with it.

“The truck behind the minibus taxi also crashed into the taxi, leaving 14 people dead. The 14 people who died, including a driver, were from the minibus taxi and one survivor was taken to hospital in critical condition. Both truckers survived the accident. “

Ntuli, who is expected to receive a full report on ongoing investigations into the cause of the accident, said his department would meet with stakeholders from the freight industry.

“The loss of a life is too much, but the death toll of this magnitude in an accident is very devastating. We send our sincere condolences to grieving families and promise to work even harder to improve the visibility of law enforcement and road user education, which is very important to end the carnage on our roads. “.
