As of Tuesday, the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases detected stands at 663,282, with 1,346 new cases identified, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced.
The country has also reported 126 more deaths from Covid-19: 5 from the Eastern Cape, 54 from KwaZulu-Natal, 45 from Gauteng, 5 from North West and 17 from the Western Cape. This brings the total number of deaths from Covid-19 to 16,118.
“We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and we thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased patients,” Mkhize said.
The Compensation Fund has expressed surprise at the rate of non-compliance with Covid-19 prevention protocols in workplaces, including state entities, with a marked increase in the number of Covid-19-related claims.
According to figures from the Department of Employment and Labor Inspection and Compliance Services (IES), only 3,787 of a total of 6,840 workplaces inspected since the country entered the blockade complied with the regulations.
Aggy Moiloa, the Inspector General, said in a statement: “The level of compliance is at a shocking 58% in both the private and government sectors. What this actually means is that out of 100 inspected workplaces, 46 do not meet standards. Considering we have an additional Covid-19 complication to account for, this means that employers are not showing the determination necessary to deal with workplace health and safety issues. ”
Moiloa said IES had issued a total of 621 ban notices, meaning that until the area of non-compliance is rectified, that business or workplace was prohibited from operating.
The department said the private sector, wholesale and retail were the most non-compliant and were slapped with 252 ban notices, followed by manufacturing with 54 and the hotel industry with 35.
