JOHANNESBURG – Eleven suspects, including former Minister of State Security Bongani Bongo, are expected to appear in court on Wednesday on corruption and money laundering allegations.
It is understood that current and former government officials in Mpumalanga will be among those in the dock.
The case relates to a dubious land deal totaling almost R124 million, dating back to 2011.
Two farms, which sold for much more than their market value, are at the center of this case, which puts another cloud of controversy over Bongo.
The MP confirmed Eyewitness news that he would be in the dock, while the deliberations on his political future take place in the corridors of the headquarters of the Luthuli House of the African National Congress (ANC).
Bongo is one of the members facing corruption allegations and is being asked to consider stepping aside as an example of the ANC’s commitment to fighting corruption.
Philani Nkwalase of the police said the matter stems from a complaint filed in 2012 and concerned the inflated prices of the two farms.
“These farms actually sold well above their market value.”
