AEW Dynamite Report – Jericho Challenges Cassidy to Mimosa Mayhem

Thanks to the NBA playoffs, AEW Dynamite did not come out on Wednesday. Instead, the show was sent back to Saturday, where he finds himself in direct competition (for most of its length) NXT acquisition on the WWE Network. On the bright side for AEW, though, Dynamite is being aired after the third game in the NBA playoff series between the Indiana Pacers and the Miami Heat, which means they could potentially make some new fans of NBA spectators sitting there.

AEW Dynamite Report for August 22, 2020 Part 1

The show did not start at 6 o’clock because the game was still going on, but things finally start at about 6:35 o’clock. Jim Ross welcomes us Dynamite May Tony Schiavone, en Taz live (I’m pretty sure it’s taped). FTR and Private Party are in the ring, and the first match starts immediately.

Private party vs. FTR

  • Tully Blanchard sits at rings in an FTR jacket.
  • Private Party takes over early control with a flood of dropkicks on both members of FTR.
  • FTR turns that around with a funny place where Dax Harwood creates a tag Cash Wheeler that is clearly illegal. That causes referee Aubrey Edwards Wheeler to stop, allowing Harwood to cheat by listening Marq Quen’s eyes.
  • Marq Quen is defeated for a while.
  • A while. FTRs do a great job of keeping him from tagging.
  • But a hot tag is inevitable. If it occurs, a dismissal Isiah Kassidy accepts both members of FTR successfully.
  • But he can only get a two-count on Dax Harwood from a springboard cutter.
  • Kassidy marks back in (too hard for someone who just kicked her ass for ten minutes), and hits a springboard crossbody on Harwood who gets two.
  • A few unsuccessful pinning combos later, Wheeler tags in and hits a spinebuster, but Kassidy breaks it up.
  • Kassidy throws Harwood outside, but Tully Blanchard pulls him out of the way when Kassidy tries to follow with a road.
  • FTR hits Goodnight Express on Quen, and it’s all over.

That was a great way if any to open up this Dynamite and give remaining NBA viewers a taste of AEW. Winning FTR was not surprising, but the match was good, and it advanced the story of Blanchard building his stable of boys who may or may not become the new Four Horsemen. He was crucial in winning FTR last night.

Jon Moxley cuts a promo MJF. He says the promo from MJF last week did not happen to him. Wherever Moxley comes from, the most expensive guys do not hide behind words. But MJF talks a lot. Moxley recognizes that MJF is talented, and he wants him to one day fulfill his potential – move out of his parents’ basement, lose his virginity, and become a world champion. But on September 5 at All Out, Moxley will defeat the hell out of MJF. Dynamite goes to ads.

MJF, wearing a collar, cuts a promo. He brings up a bunch of dictators who were homicidal maniacs, but they pale in comparison to Dictator Jon. He says Moxley attacked him last week like a coward. He’s really talking about his neck injury. He can not even play with his children. The whole time MJF is talking, the campaign staff he told to smile more a few weeks ago, Nina, are desperately struggling to keep a smile.

MJF doubles in pain. His lawyer takes over and sells how dangerous the Paradigm Shift is. He claims that five million people signed the petition they posted, and demanded that the Paradigm Shift be banned. The lawyer has made a contract for the match at All Out which specifies that the move is not allowed to be used during the match. He says that if Moxley is such a badass, he does not need that one small move to win a match. He threatens to prosecute Moxley for everything he has.

Natural Nightmares and Jurassic Express vs. Lucha Bros and The Butcher and the Blade

  • Everyone is back in the ring for this match. No entries. However, there will be announcements of ring.
  • The heels attack earlier Justin Roberts can announce the match, send their opponents outside the ring.
  • Lucha Bros hit stereo dikes, and then Butcher en Blade bring QT Marshall in for a four-on-one scenario.
  • Marshall holds his own for a bit, but he is overwhelmed by numbers.
  • Marshall manages to get out Dustin Rhodes, who kills both Butcher and Blade and ends up in control of Blade.
  • But when the ref is knocked down by Blade, the remaining heels pull Dustin out and work him over.
  • Rhodes is defeated by the heels, especially Rey Fenix en Pentagon, to some ads, and during them in photo-in-photo.
  • Hey, it’s a DC Fandom commercial. God, I’m glad I rarely have to cover these days.
  • Luchasaurus gets the tag directly to the ads. He hits the Lucha Bros while Jungle Boy hits a forest of dives to the outside.
  • Luchasaurus and Butcher have a hoss fight. Luchasaurus loses.
  • However, QT Marshall made a spectacular save. Lucha Bros was the replacement.
  • Jungle Boy gets his turn in the ring, but Fenix pulls him out as well.
  • Dustin Rhodes hits a Canadian Destroyer at the Pentagon.
  • That leaves the Pentagon and Jungle Boy in the ring.
  • Pentagon goes crazy when Blade wants to do a spike piledriver with Pentagon. Pentagon will do this move only with his brother, I think?
  • Blade shakes him, that counts as a tag. Jungle Boy rolls him up and gets the win.

While the heels are fighting, Eddie Kingston comes to the ring and cuts a promo. He tells the two teams that they are better than all the other tag teams, and they only lose if they are split. He speaks to each man individually. He wants them to run with him, united. I think we just saw a new stable form. And I think that was the real purpose of this match, with some nice spots, but otherwise never really had a chance to go through.

In a pre-recorded segment Britt Baker does rehab in the gym. Kip Sabian en Penelope Ford are there too, work out, and of course figure out. Britt pulls them together to read to her about how all the kissing they do can cause cavities. Britt offers her a year of free dental care as Penelope Ford will join her in a handicap match against Big Swole. Ford is reluctant, but when Britt throws in Reba and does her makeup for free too, she’s on board. Dynamite takes a commercial turn.

Tony Schiavone is in the ring after the break for an interview with Orange Cassidy. He calls Cassidy to the ring. Best friends come with him.

Dynamite Interview – Orange Cassidy

Schiavone asks Cassidy about his thoughts on getting the biggest win of his career against Chris Jericho last week. Cassidy has nothing to say. Chris Jericho’s music plays, and Jericho emerges to the top of the entrance ramp with a bottle of The Bubbly and a microphone. Jim Ross talks about recruiting Jericho to WWE back in the day.

Jericho congratulates Orange Cassidy for defeating him Dynamite last week. Jericho says he has only been caught in AEW three times, and one of those times was by Cassidy. Jericho says he’s a little shy, but he’s proud of Cassidy for teaching him and proving he can be a star event star. Jericho says he wants to toast Cassidy, but he has to say something first.

They each have one win against each other, so they need to have a match to decide who is the best. And he does not want it to be a normal match. He suggests a new type of match he made – The Mimosa Mayhem Match. Jericho has a humorous video package to explain the match that will take place around All Out. Eighty gallons of orange juice is mixed with 500 cases of a bit of bubbling at rings. You win by pinfall, submission or by throwing in the barrel of mimosa.

Jericho wants to know if Cassidy accepts the challenge. Cassidy gives a half-hearted thumbs up. Jerich is happy, and he wants to toast Cassidy, but he wants all his friends out to toast him too. The Inner Circle heads out and surrounds the ring. They stand in front, and Jerico offers a toast: “here is to ya.” He takes a sigh of relief and then orders to attack the Inner Circle. Inner Circle kills Best Friends and throws Cassidy into a Judas effect. Then they hold Cassidy upside down and go bubbling all over him.

Dynamite goes to ads with JR promising “hot six-man tag action.” Ross really knows what attracts AEW fans. Since this match, the bloom will come in the second hour of AEW Dynamite, we will now move directly to part two of this report. Click below.

About Jude Terror

A prophecy once said that in the darkest days of the comic strip, a hero would come to lead the people through a plague of overly expensive floppies, stimulating variant covers, reissue # 1 release, and super-mega-crossover- events.

Unfortunately, that prophecy was wrong. Oh, Jude Terror was right. For ten years. About everything. But no one listened. And so Jude Terror has moved on to a more important mission: Turn Bleeding Cool into a pro wrestling dirt magazine!
