The successful antitrust hearing with CEOs of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google scheduled for Monday is likely to be postponed, two people familiar with the matter told CNBC, due to a conflict with the memorial service for the late representative John Lewis, D-Ga.
The Judicial Committee of the House of Representatives and the Antimonopoly Subcommittee, which will organize the hearing, have not yet confirmed the measure and the spokesmen did not immediately comment.
The audience, which will feature Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, is intended to be the culmination of more than a year of research into the four giants. technological. After the hearing, lawmakers plan to issue a report based on their findings throughout the investigation and to propose legislation that aims to update antitrust laws to respond to the unique problems of digital markets.
The project has already been delayed by the public health crisis that disrupted Congress’ normal course of business. Subcommittee Chairman David Cicilline, DR.I. said in January that he expected the report to be completed in early April, but that the deadline has been changed by at least several months.
It is not yet clear when the hearing will be rescheduled.
A special ceremony is scheduled to honor Lewis on Monday at 2 pm ET at the United States Capitol Rotunda. Afterward, he will be in state on Capitol Hill. The antitrust hearing had been scheduled to start at noon.
