A warning about opening gifts during friendship hour

Pokémon GO Fest 2020 may be starting here in the United States, but it’s over for large stretches of the rest of the world. Such is the weird part of playing a global game that still runs in local time: places like New Zealand and Australia come first. But that’s actually useful, sometimes: other people can demo things earlier and give us some advice.

The one that especially interests me today is Friendship Hour, one of the 5 rotating habitats that define Pokémon GO Fest 2020. Friendship Hour can produce one of the game’s most coveted elements: rare sweets, which can become in candy for any Pokémon

This and some other tips come to us from the user reddit official_kerubin.

First of all, you don’t want to send or open gifts for any time other than friendship time, because that just doesn’t do anyone any good.

Second, you want to take advantage of how the event is structured. During each hour, there will be a global challenge that coaches can complete to unlock a bonus. Once the bonus is unlocked, it will be available for the remainder of that hour.

We will unlock the bonus for sending gifts, so do it as soon as the hour starts. But don’t open any! You want to wait for the bonus to activate before doing so.

The content of a gift is apparently determined at the time of opening, so you can only get rare sweets once the hourly bonus has been activated.

Bottom line: send your gifts at the start of the hour, but don’t open them. Once the bonus is unlocked, go wild opening gifts. Stop again when the time is up, and then repeat for the next friendship hour.

So if you do that, you should be able to get some rare candy when opening presents. By making sure you ship and open at the right times, you will maximize your chances of going out on a decent ride. Please also note that this will only be live for ticket holders.
