A train derails at 8th Avenue and 14th Street train stations in Chelsea north of NYC; 1 injury reported

CHELSIA, Manhattan (WABC) – A train derailed on Sunday morning after being exposed to debris on a road leading to a subway station in Manhattan, according to the MTA.

The incident happened in a northbound train at Chelsea’s 8th Avenue and 14th Street train stations.

Officials say a 30-year-old homeless man was seen by witnesses throwing construction debris on the subway tracks, causing the front of the train to derail.

They are currently being interrogated at Transit District 2, the cost of which is outstanding.

NYCT Interim President Sarah Feinberg said in a statement: “The northbound train came in contact with debris on the roadbed as it was being towed to the 14th-8th Ave station, causing the wheels to derail. “All the passengers aboard the train were safely discharged at the station. The matter is under investigation.”

The MTA says all four tracks were damaged in the incident.

“As a result of this incident, a northbound train near 34th Street remains in the tunnel and NYCT is working quickly to remove customers from the train,” Feinberg said.

Sarah Meyer, chief consumer officer for NYC Transit, also commented on the situation.

The train had about 30 passengers. No serious injuries were reported at this time.

Service has been suspended in both directions south of 14th St. in Manhattan. There is no northbound service with 8th Avenue from Canal St. to 59 St. Columbus Circle, and limited service in Uptown Manhattan and the Bronx.
