Welp.
The BMW E30 M3, the OG M3, the quintessential BMW, has truly been a highly prized and sought-after collector’s item, but a sale of a quarter of a million dollars in one is … quite wild.
This 1988 M3 which just sold at Bring A Trailer for $ 250,000 had 8,000 miles and looks essentially perfect. But that dollar figure still eliminates all E30 sales. At least, all the ones I’ve seen. All that BaT has seen too, according to their auction results spreadsheet on this model.
A good ’89 E30 M3 went for around $ 100,000 two years ago and the auction site had not recorded anything higher until today. Check out the list By the way, if you want to see a lot of photos of today’s crazy and expensive car.
I … I don’t even know, fam. These are great cars with lots of cache, historical value, a charming design, and a great driving experience – but $ 250,000! If you want to buy one of these in the near future, sorry. You can expect this sale to be quoted after “I know what I got” in every ad for these now and even the applauded ones are about to go from “expensive” to “come on, buddy.”
G / O Media may receive a commission
I don’t want to sound super bitter, I wasn’t on the market myself, but I get a little discouraged thinking that big cars like this are only being used as parking spots for large sums of cash. Just a lifetime of being displaced fromand super nice garage space to another. Surely, you can’t spend this kind of coins on an old M3 and then drive well? Every mile would cost you thousands! Or something!
That said, I have a couple of cars that I barely drive and just enjoy looking at, who am I to criticize other collectors?
However, it seems that it is becoming increasingly difficult to buy older hardware. I think I’m going to hold onto my Datsun a little bit more after all.
