A stripped father has a message for parents and young gamers after the death of his 24-year-old son from deep vein thrombosis: “Get up, walk, and warn your children.”
In a heartbreaking Facebook post, Stanley Greening, 56, of Harlington, Bedfordshire, UK, told friends and family how he lost his son, Louis O’Neill, last month.
“On June 3 something horrible happened, the worst you can imagine,” he wrote on June 23. “My son, my dear boy, Louis, is gone. Not because of the evil virus but because of him … This damn confinement. After being suspended, he went to his gaming world to escape. Trapped in a virtual world, he became less active, so easy to do. “
Louis, who was a soccer coach at Center Parcs in Hertfordshire, a vacationer recreation property in England, had been suspended since mid-March, when most of the country was ordered to take refuge at home during the coronavirus pandemic.
As a loophole, Louis’s father said he took the game online with friends to pass the time. Stanley said Louis “became less active” and allowed “hours” [to] fly when absorbed by the screen. “
“I have done it countless times,” he added. “But nobody, and I mean nobody, never in a million years would have predicted a blood clot. And so, he destroyed my son and I died inside along with him. “
In May, two weeks before his death, Louis complained of leg pain. When he called the emergency services, they told him it could be food poisoning. How that conclusion was reached has not been disclosed.
Who is warning young people? Who is warning someone, of any age? Stanley asked. “My son will live, I will continue to spread this warning on his behalf.”
The father, who is also an accomplished athlete, knew that long periods of sitting, a requirement for avid gamblers, can lead to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), especially for older people who are more prone to vascular problems compared to young people. .
DVT is a life-threatening medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein located near the center of the body, making it more difficult to detect and access. If left unattended, the clot can cause debilitating pain and could lead to a pulmonary embolism. The often fatal condition is caused by a blood clot that breaks loose and targets the lungs, thereby blocking the pulmonary artery and reducing oxygen in the blood.
There are a number of risk factors associated with DVT, such as obesity, smoking, pregnancy, heart disease, certain medications, and hormonal treatments, but Stanley believes that his son’s death could have been prevented if he had taken longer each day to move the legs. – which promotes blood flow and reduces the probability of clotting.
“As more and more of us are working from home, you probably won’t get out of your chair as much as you need to. Get up, walk and please warn your children, ”Stanley pleaded.
