The iPhones of 2019 do not have 5G connectivity.

Sarah Tew / CNET

Rumors are swirling that Apple will include 5G connectivity before its arrival this year iPhone 12. More specifically, Apple analyst Ming-chi Kuo predicts the company will discover three 5G phones. There are a few reasons why the company did not jump on the trend in 2019.

First, Apple is usually not the first to be on the lookout for mobile trends, instead preferring to wait for emerging wireless technologies to become widespread before keeping them busy. It was behind its competitors in making phones with 3G and 4G LTE connectivity when those networks launched.

Second, Apple stopped using the leading 5G modem provider, Qualcomm, due to a dispute over Qualcomm license fees. The two companies settle their lawsuit in April 2019, and then agreed a multi-year 5G chip deal. This eventually led to Apple’s previous partner of 5G modems, Intel out of the 5G phone modem company always one Apple later acquired Intel’s smartphone modem company for $ 1 billion. Apple is still working with Qualcomm, but it started too late with the launch of a 5G iPhone last year.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
