Three New Orleans Pelicans players tested positive for COVID-19 when the team began scaling up activities leading to the NBA season restart on July 30.
The Pelicans’ executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin told reporters that the three players, who were not named, are self-isolating and undergoing daily tests and may return to the team after two days of negative testing.
According to ESPN’s Andrew Lopez, the three positive tests for the Pelicans were among the 16 announced last week by the NBA and the National Association of Basketball Players out of a total of 302 conducted on June 23. The 22 teams included in the reboot tested players and staff members included in the trip parties that will go to the Orlando area next month.
According to the NBA’s return schedule, players will begin mandatory individual practice on Wednesday. The Pelicans are among the group of eight teams scheduled to travel to Orlando on July 8.
New Orleans will face the Utah Jazz in the first game of the restart.
The Pelicans (28-36) are 3.5 games behind the Memphis Grizzlies (32-33) for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
