What our NFL Nation reporters heard today

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton hinted at some dissatisfaction with the altered preseason / training camp schedule on Wednesday, emphasizing multiple times that “there’s nothing in this that is like training camp.” But he said teams that can adjust better will benefit more. “Well, it’s not important regardless of how someone feels,” said Payton. “The important thing is to quickly take what they gave us and prepare to prepare the team.”

Payton said the Saints will have as many padded practices as possible, and that competitive games are key to player evaluations. “I will tell you this, the amount of running and lifting that you will do will be significant. Again, this is your schedule, this is not our schedule, this is the union schedule, this is the council schedule administration. This is not the recommended schedule by our coaches to those parts. So we have the schedule and we will follow it up to a T. ” – Mike Triplett

Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy emphasizes that the QB competition is still open between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles, despite the shortened preseason. Nagy says QBs will be evaluated on every play, not just on every pitch. GM Ryan Pace adds that naming the eventual starter will be a collaborative effort. – Jeff Dickerson
