2 dropper prisoners die after testing positive for COVID-19


DRAPER – Two inmates at Utah State Prison have died after testing positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of Covid-19 inmates at the prison to nine, according to the Department of Corrections.

In a statement issued Wednesday evening, correctional officials said one detainee, a 70-year-old man, died Nov. 23 and was hospitalized at the time of death. Another detainee, a 48-year-old man, died on November 25 and was hospitalized at the time of death. No further details about the individuals were given.

According to correctional officials, both inmates were held by medical staff at the Ir Kirih 5 facility before being admitted to their hospital and thereafter.

On Tuesday, a detainee at the Quir r 2 facility noticed symptoms and was quickly tested by medical staff, the correctional department said in a statement. The test was positive for COVID-19, and staff immediately began protocol as well as large-scale testing.

Other inmates who died on November 11 include Utah State Prison inmates who died on Nov. 11 and other inmates who died on Nov. 11 after testing positive for Covid-1 for.

Correctional officials say medical staff is always available and there is an active presence in the units at least twice a day for check-ups with inmates.

According to the Department of Corrections, there are 560 active cases between the Utah State Prison, the Central Utah Correctional Facility and the state’s inmates held in the county prison. It lists the outbreaks in these areas: quirh 5, quirh 2, promontory, lawn peak, watch (ch-dog-block), ironwood, henry (dogwood) and boulder (fir, gale and hickory).

The Department of Correction’s COVID-19 dashboard currently reports a total of 1,289 positive COVID-19 test results in facilities.

Due to the outbreak, all visits, including volunteer and religious services, have been postponed until December 1.
