Well, it was time for a content TWAB, and Bungie went deep in discussion of the Destiny Content Vault this week. While some of it was things we knew, other parts of it were new information. The end result? Even more is vaulted than many people originally thought.
I was surprised at a few different points when reading this very long list of vaulted items. I’ll go over the whole thing from top to bottom to show what specifically jumped me out.
Lose 7 strikes, earn 2
While the strikes we lost were no surprise, seven over Io, Mercury, Mars and Titan, what we won was a bit surprising. There is only one strike mentioned as arrival with Europe, and we get at the same time one returned Cosmodrome strike, Will of Crota. Two more returns will arrive later in the year, Devil’s Lair and Fallen SABER, but yes, we deserve a lot of strikes for not many replacements, which means the playlist will shrink even further. It’s kind of a bummer to compare this to Forsaken who gave us four brand new strikes (although one of them was PS exclusive), and I do not think we lose more than we win. But I think it will be rebuilt in the coming years.
Gambit is On Life Support
So, in the big Gambit-versus-Gambit Prime-face-off, Gambit Prime has ‘won’ in the sense that the new, condensed Gambit mode will be one round, and include things like fashion running in it . It also uses only the Gambit Prime cards, in which case the Dreaming City and Tangled Shore cards are vaulted (Gambit and Crucible cards may still exist on vaulted planets). This … does not strike me as ideal, seeing as Gambit only had six cards and now it’s up to four in total? There is no indication that there will be more with the expansion.
But this is even less involved than Prime, because Bungie Prime eliminates weapon direction and its effects, and only promises to use those perks later as mods maybe. All in all, it really seems like Gambit is on life support and it’s hard to imagine when a significant amount of resources will be devoted to it in the future. It shrinks dramatically with this update.
Cut crispy mode
Scorched and Momentum Control are being cut, which is bursting at the seams. The Trials lighthouse still remains, despite what happens to Mercury. Again, the cut Crucible cards do not rely on the destinations they will stay in, but many of them have already been out of rotation, so I was not surprised that most of them were there.
Prophecy remains, sort of
Originally, Bungie said Prophecy would have to take a full season off before returning, but it seems likely that the delay over Beyond Light has changed, as they now say it simply “should not be temporarily available for a short period” which makes it look like it will not be completely gone in the end, which is a bit of good news. That sounds more like weeks than months, but we’ll see. I still do not really understand how long this season will last, now starting in November.
Vaulted Exotic Quests And Catalysts
Bungie created a list of quest exotics that are now part of the new “Memorial” kiosk system, which is how you will purchase them once their first quests are vaulted. Although they were not named, Bungie later stated this also applies to both Anarchy and Tarrabah, the raid exotics. This seems to exist outside of the current Rahool Cipher system.
There is also a list of vaulted catalysts, some of which appear a bit of a surprise. For example, you can only get seasonal catalysts like Witherhoard. But there is a list of destination-bound catalysts that will go away and will net come back this season, but Bungie will be reintroducing them in the future. This includes boundary alliances such as the Leviathan raids as Worldline bound to EP as well as those bound to secret missions.
Zero hour is gone
This was an open question because Zero Hour is on Earth, which is not sunk, but Bungie says the old tower is part of the Red War campaign, and since it is vaulted, so is Zero Hour. I’m not sure I’m buying that justification, but it’s a big space and I think Bungie wanted to delete it.
Red war is gone
Oh yeah, did I mention that the entire Red War campaign is gone? Because Io and Titan are gone, instead of paper on those missing parts with cuts, the whole campaign of the Red War and all its missions disappears. Bungie says they will expand the Cosmodrome intro as what New Light players will encounter when they start playing, but I did not expect all to cut the red missions. And yet, here we are.
The farm is gone
And with no campaign for Red War, there’s almost no reason for The Farm to exist, so it’s gone. No idea where Tyra Karn and Mithrax are going.
The Forges are gone
Even though the Forges are on Earth and Nessus, they are cut, and all those exotics are placed in the Memorial system. Ada-1 will also be gone, and if there are any returned Black Armory weapons, we will clearly not get them from the Forges.
The Account Has Gone
I do not regret passing on Reckoning, my most hated hate of the Destiny activity in history, and yet I was surprised to see that it went because it did not attach to any of the solar areas. But with Prime armament gone and Prime weapons falling into the world, there is literally no point to its existence. Burned in Hell, Bridge of Folly. Never come out of that joke again.
The Tribute Hall is gone
Tribute Hall was not mentioned by name in the TWAB, but if you look up the actual full list of what’s going on, it’s actually up. That was such a useful test ground, that should almost replace it, but whatever that may be, we have no idea.
That, yes, it’s a lot of stuff. Even more than we thought. i will say, however, this update is only focused on what goes away, instead of what we win. Like for example, I do not think we can say at this point with 100% certainty that zero new Crucible or Gambit cards will come. I mean maybe not, but those are probably just not mentioned yet. We do not know what new activities Beyond Light and Season of the Whatever may bring, and new activities now last at least a year instead of disappearing immediately, so there may be things to replace Forges, Reckoning, Menagarie, EP and so on. .
But yes, some new answers, but a ton of questions remain. It’s … a lot of cutting.
