11 million people enter Chinese lockdown after coronavirus outbreak



According to reports, Chinese authorities have ordered a lockdown of the city of 110 million people as cases of coronavirus are on the rise there.

Authorities in Hebei Province, near the country’s capital Beijing, have reported 120 new cases. The South China Morning Post reported that one of the cases was found in Shijiazhuang city.

Beijing has stepped in to vaccinate its population, but many are concerned about increasing the number of cases in Hebei Province and Gaocheng District.

Authorities banned all residents from leaving Shijiazhuang, and they also banned the movement for residents of Gaosheng District, which has about 800,000 residents.

The head of the city’s transportation bureau said Thursday that Shijiazhuang has suspended all transportation leaving the city.

The lockdown will allow officers to continue mass testing across the city. The local government tested about 20 million people by Wednesday before the lockdown.

Experts are concerned that such a large spike could indicate that the virus had been spreading in the area for some time.

A case outside of Shijiazhuang was found in the neighboring city of Xingtai, the gene sequence results showing that the case is similar to “European strain”.

Al Jazeera reports that the Beijing Moon is trying to vaccinate most of its population before the new year.

China is using a vaccine developed by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Synopharm. The synoform vaccine has been found to be about 79% effective after two doses.
