Netflix’s latest reality show, Indian Matchmaking, has wowed the urban Indian crowd and they just love the unintended comedy this show offers. The show has a great set of interesting personalities, starting with Sima Taparia, the matchmaker. In all eight episodes of the show, it’s hard for us to believe that this was not designed as a comedy, especially with the awkward pauses and choice of music.
While we understand that this show promotes many archaic concepts, it works ironically for many viewers. With this in mind, we listed the ten funniest things we saw in Indian Matchmaking.
1. ‘I am Sima from Mumbai’
‘I’m Sima from Mumbai’ has reached the level of internet discourse that now deserves its own t-shirts. I guess the creators knew they had gold merchandise in their hands when they decided to keep the ‘I’m Sima from Mumbai’ line in every episode.
2. When the face reader found everyone “stubborn”
We first meet Janardhan Dhurbe, the face reading expert, in the second episode of Indian Matchmaking. Now Dhurbe is so adept that he will only look at someone’s photos and give us a detailed explanation of their personality, but here, he only had one line for everyone he saw, ‘Yeh bahut ziddi hain’ (They are very stubborn).
3. When Aparna hated everything
I am totally in favor of Aparna’s independent spirit and in no way support the aunts who are expecting her to adjust / commit to getting married. But who knows someone who hates so many things? Well, now we all do it, thanks to Aparna! “You know how I hate comedy” is now a meme, and with good reason. From hating the beaches, the outdoors, comedy, relaxing, her work, Aparna needs to talk about everything she hates on her own podcast (although she hates it).
4. ‘Srini, the loser’
Shortly after Aparna’s first date with Srini, there is a scene where her family and Sima are discussing the bad date. Aparna explains why Srini is not the right choice for her and her mother says “Srini the loser”. That statement made me look at the screen with a confused expression, followed by laughter, of course. I felt bad for Srini because who is so direct while rejecting someone, that also on camera?

5. When Sima Aunty wanted Aparna to change her ‘conversation pattern’
Aparna is quite disappointed after her date with Srini, and although Sima Aunty is preparing more matches for her, she feels that Aparna must change her “conversation pattern”. The chemistry between Sima and Aparna’s mother was straight out of a saas-bahu show, and Sima proved it while speaking of the latter’s “bad vibes”.
6. Pradhyuman’s meeting with the life coach.
The scene when Pradhyuman meets the life coach was bizarre, to say the least. While receiving obvious advice about life, Pradhyuman asks the woman, “You know so many people, what do girls really want?” To which the woman replies, “First of all, they want good looks.” As if the “little rich boy” wanted a greater ego boost, the woman went on to say that something else a woman wants is “a man secure enough to allow the woman to be his own person.” Pradhyuman needs to grow much bigger before ending someone!
7. ‘Do you like mammals?’
When Pradhyuman had his first date with Rushali, he made me laugh all the time. Only the discomfort of a first date, combined with some weird conversations, provides great content. The line that took the cake here was when Pradhyuman asked Rushali if he liked animals, she answered in the affirmative and he said, “Mammals, or like marine life?” This hilarious line cannot be written even by the best comedy writers. The poor girl is so impressed by the question that she simply answers “animals.”
8. When Geeta turned out to be another Sima
Geeta, another matchmaker, enters the show in Ankita’s story and is portrayed as the progressive matchmaker, if such a thing exists. We are given the impression that he is miles away from Sima’s focus and believes in understanding a person rather than pressuring him to “adjust,” but behold, she is the same. She surprised Ankita and us with her personality change.
9. Akshay’s mother, who makes the decisions.
While the show was about men and women looking for a partner, it was Akshay’s mother, Preeti, who had some of the best lines. “This year you are getting married, next year they have a baby,” he rolled me on the floor for about ten minutes. By “they”, she meant her older son and daughter-in-law. Shortly after Preeti said this, there was a photo of her daughter-in-law’s laugh, which made me laugh even more.
10. When Akshay wanted someone “like his mother”
Akshay is 25 years old, and his mother feels it is too late to get married. Poor Preeti’s BP is out of control and she cares about Akshay, but her son wants someone who is ‘like his mother’. At one point, Akshay says, “My mother is literally what I want to see in a wife.” We can’t even begin to explain the tragi-comedy here.
