In late July, when Microsoft reveals more about the world-class games coming to Xbox Series X, we’ll have a pretty complete picture of what the next-gen launch lineup will look like (except for this year’s Call of Duty game, which it’s a missing piece of the puzzle.)
Sony, after all, has already revealed what the launch lineup for the PS5’s first party looks like, with Spider-Man: Miles Morales looking like the only major title to be released this year. Deathloop, a great first-person game from the brilliant minds of Arkane Studios, is a timed exclusive that will help augment the software available since launch.
Still, in addition to the games we know of, there are 10 bigger and more exciting games that have been credibly announced or rumored, and we predict they’ll hit PS5 and Xbox Series X as well. We’ve rounded them up for you below. An idea of what the next years of each console will be like, although it is worth noting that none of the following is officially confirmed for these new platforms yet.
Elden Ring
Elden Ring has been announced for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and it doesn’t have next-gen platforms yet. However, with no release date set for this year, we’d be surprised to see the next big series from Dark Souls developer From Software start in 2021 without a next-gen edition. You could also follow the Dark Souls 2 pattern, launching first on current generation consoles, before getting an upgraded version for newer hardware.
Starfield
Bethesda Game Studios’ upcoming single-player RPG Starfield has not been confirmed for any formats yet. In fact, we haven’t seen anything from the space-based RPG since its reveal in 2018, when it was made clear that the project was fairly early in development. However, we are pretty sure it will end up in next-gen formats in one form or another, simply because publisher Bethesda has already been quite proactive in focusing on next-gen consoles. Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo, for example, are ready for release on PS5 but not on PS4 as-is.
A similar situation to Starfield, but even further. Starfield will arrive before Bethesda Game Studios’ Elder Scrolls 6, and we wouldn’t expect to see Skyrim follow-up until the end of the next generation of consoles. Try not to think about how old you will be by then.
Harry Potter RPG
In a Bloomberg report on the unannounced Harry Potter RPG leaked earlier in 2018, it was mentioned by two sources that the PS5 and Xbox Series X were among the selected formats with this game. Hopefully this is the first major non-Lego game set in the fictional universe.
Dragon Age 4
There is a game that we know doesn’t have an official name, EA basically confirmed that the next Dragon Age game was configured for PS5 and Xbox Series X with some technology demo images released during EA Play 2020. Images of what looks like a game environment turned off (though EA didn’t specifically mention what game it was), with EA explaining that BioWare is “using this next generation of technology to bring those fantasy worlds to life.”

EA confirmed that a new Skate is being prepared at its 2020 Play event. No formats were named, but since production is so early that they didn’t even show a glimpse of the game, we look forward to seeing this debut on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Batman: Gotham Knights (rumored)
The upcoming Batman game is not named yet, but recent URL logs captured by Resetera suggest ‘Gotham Knights’ is the subtitle. Arkham Origins developer Warner Bros Montreal is expected to be the developer, based on multiple previews posted on his Twitter account. According to the same Bloomberg report on the Harry Potter project, it was mentioned that the next Batman game will be revealed at the DC Fandome event in August.
A Eurogamer report says it is also targeting next-generation hardware.
Suicide Squad (rumored)
That same Eurogamer report says Rocksteady Studios, developer of the Batman: Arkham series, is working on a game based on the DC Comics characters from Suicide Squad. This is apparently aimed at next-gen consoles as well. This must have been in the works for a long time now: Rocksteady hasn’t released a new game since Arkham VR 2016.
Devil 4
Diablo 4 is currently announced for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but a new generation is likely to be released as well. When The Telegraph asked Blizzard’s Allen Adham about next-gen consoles, he said, “You can bet we have our eyes on that.” Since Blizzard supports its games with expansions for several years, it makes sense for us to see the game on new platforms.
Beyond good and evil 2
It’s hard to know if Ubisoft’s long sequel will crystallize into a real game, as it was revealed three years ago and has no release date yet, but we hope so. This cooperative action RPG allows players to fly spaceships around a large science fiction world, but it’s hard to imagine exactly what it will be like to play anytime soon based on what Ubisoft has released so far. The platforms are listed as ‘pending’, so we hope to see it announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X when it appears again.
